| One of the oldest burial grounds in New Zealand. The cemetery received its name from the ship HMS Buffalo which was loading kauri spars at Coromandel, when on 3 January 1838, Able Seaman David Wanks died and was buried in Coromandel. Many of the early burials were of people involved in mining and elaborate headstones and wrought iron surrounds reflected the standing of people in the community. Burial records dating from the 1890’s are held by the local Council. |
